What is the Shark Nets?

Shark Nets is a type of fishing net, the main purpose is to prevent large marine predators such as sharks from entering shallow waters. These nets are deployed in beach swimming areas to protect swimmers from shark attacks. In addition, they can protect swimmers from collisions with nearby ships and prevent marine debris from washing ashore.

The fundamental principle of Shark Nets is that “reduced shark presence equates to fewer attacks.” By lowering the local shark population, the likelihood of shark attacks is believed to diminish. Historical data on shark attacks indicates that the consistent and regular deployment of Shark Nets and drumlines can significantly lower the occurrence of such incidents. For instance, in Australia, there has been just one fatal shark attack on a monitored beach since 1962, compared to 27 between 1919 and 1961.

Shark Nets are commonly employed in the Middle East, Australia, New Zealand, and other regions. The nets typically have a thickness ranging from 2 to 5 mm, with mesh sizes that are usually small, for example, 1.5 x 1.5 cm, 3 x 3 cm, and 3.5 x 3.5 cm. The color palette varies, with white, black, and green being the more prevalent choices.
